From Gender-Stories to a Queer Future
Portrait Workshop
With Naa Teki Martey Lebar, Ciwan Veysel
In cooperation with Queer Museum Vienna
In the workshop “From Gender-Stories to a Queer Future,” we’ll explore stereotypes, role models, basic knowledge about gender, the power of language and the power of images and representation. Participants will use instant cameras that print on thermal paper to take portraits of one another (following a brief introduction to consent, image rights, etc.) and then create collages in which they use the portraits as a basis to design their own fantasy characters, superheroes, or alter egos. The idea behind this is to imagine living in a utopian, queer future where everyone can simply dress and style themselves however they want, where it doesn’t matter what body or anatomy one has, and where restrictive notions of gender no longer play a role.
The workshop will be led by artists Naa Teki Martey Lebar and Ciwan Veysel.
Naa Teki Lebar works as an artist and writer. In her artistic practice, she explores how we see and are seen. She questions dominant perspectives and social narratives and seeks ways to deconstruct them and retell them anew. She also graduated from the Friedl Kubelka School of Artistic Photography.
Ciwan Veysel is a visual artist born in Turkey who lives and works in Austria. In his artistic practice, he combines art and identity, addressing political and social memory, migration and diaspora, queerness, borders, and Kurdish identity. Ciwan also works in the fields of photography, curating, and performance, and is active in various artist collectives and art festivals founded by Vienna-based artists with immigrant backgrounds.
No previous photography experience is needed.
