Phytogramme

Workshop

Markus Maicher uses the technique of phytography; it allows for detailed chemical traces of plants to be captured on photographic emulsion, using biodegradable and ecologically safe chemicals mixed from household items. Unlike salt printing, the plants are immersed in a solution of washing soda and vitamin C; the phenols react with the solution to form a mild photographic developer. The leaves are then placed on the photographic paper in daylight, allowing them to slowly imprint in the emulsion.
