Inspired by the exhibition Michelle Piergoelam: Across the Water at FOTO ARSENAL WIEN and working with the photographer, we will explore memory, cultural heritage, and storytelling through photographs and installations: What does it mean to remember stories that were never written down?
Together we will look at how artist Michelle Piergoelam weaves songs, symbols, and myths into visual narratives that reflect (family) history beyond official archives, which are often empty.
In the workshop, participants will first explore selected works from the exhibition in a playful way, discovering how images can express memory, culture, and imagination. Families will then move to the workshop space to create their own photographs inspired by the subject matter of Across the Water.
Using various materials, children and their parents, grandparents, and other caregivers will experiment with textures, colors, and shapes to create personal visual narratives. No prior knowledge is required—just bring your curiosity and perhaps even an object that embodies your family’s memories or history.
This event offers a special opportunity for families to experience contemporary photography together, explore ideas as a group, and engage creatively with concepts such as identity and memory.
